Sixteen weeks of lectures, studying and schoolwork start now.
Spring semester marks the start of something new. For some, this can bring hope and excitement. For others, this may bring nerves and uncertainty.
Kissing winter break goodbye means re-entering “student mode.” Whether starting their first or last spring semester at Marquette University, most students have their own repertoire of tried-and-true habits.
Marquette emphasizes student success, by providing resources both in person and online.
But, if students are still adding to their toolbox for building a successful semester, tips can be found across several different university websites. Ten of the most emphasized suggestions are outlined below.
1. Get organized
Looking at an entire semester ahead can be overwhelming. It can be useful to plan as much as possible right away. Being well-versed on syllabi, writing down all assignments and exams, putting classes and other obligations into a calendar, mapping out a routine and preparing everyday supplies can be good ways to adjust to a new semester.
The Academic Resource Center at Marquette specializes in helping students take control of their academics through tutoring and teaching useful skills. Time management, study skills, motivation and resilience are all foundations that the ARC educates students about.
2. Meet classmates and professors
16 weeks of class adds up to many hours spent in the same four walls with the same people. It can be valuable to befriend classmates to just have a familiar face, bond over coursework and turn to for peer-to-peer assistance.
Professors can also be a valuable resource for students, so attending their office hours or simply making an effort to connect may go a long way throughout the semester. Students can find office hours in their course syllabi or by contacting their professors. Many professors encourage, or even require, that students attend.
3. Balance priorities
As a new chapter begins, it can be beneficial to evaluate priorities. Maintaining a balanced, well-rounded lifestyle can be achieved by deciding on the most important habits and responsibilities to keep up on a daily basis. Consider academics, work, time with friends and family, health, exercise and spirituality, among other things.
Once priorities are set, figure out what it might look like to juggle all of these. This might change throughout the semester, but trying to weigh responsibilities early can be helpful.
4. Set achievable goals
No matter how big or small, setting attainable goals can be a way to stay motivated, track progress and celebrate wins throughout the semester. Think about what specific steps are necessary to make goals feasible and take small strides every day. Clear intentions can lead to meaningful progress.
5. Keep healthy habits
Each week can look different, but prioritizing health can make for a more successful semester. Good sleep, proper eating, regular exercise and mental health practices contribute to a better overall health.
Marquette’s Wellness + Helfaer Recreation Center advocates for a holistic approach to health and has various resources to help that mission. The gym, medical clinic, counseling center and center for student wellness and health promotion are all available to students.
6. Train your brain
For some, jumping back into studying and schoolwork can be difficult after a four-week break. As classes start, the brain can be trained just like any other muscle: the more it is used, the stronger it will be. Each student can find the best way to sharpen their brain — whether that’s with brain games, reading leisurely or diving straight into lots of studying.
7. Get involved
Students can make the most of their experiences by finding ways to immerse themselves. Finding an organization, job, internship, program, sport, undergraduate research job, volunteer opportunity, etc. that aligns most with a student’s interests, goals and schedule can significantly add to their college experience.
There are nearly 300 clubs, Greek life, professional programs like Marquette Mentors or E-lead, on-campus jobs, campus ministry and much more that students can look into according to their goals and interests.
8. Use campus resources
Marquette has various resources across campus that are easily accessible to students. Whether they are looking for a workout space, career guidance, medical assistance, tutoring, etc., students can seek help across campus. A simple online search can go a long way.
Students aren’t alone in this journey and are encouraged to take advantage of all that the university has to offer.
9. Stay connected
It can be helpful for students to be truly connected in many areas of their life. Connecting with friends and family and keeping a good circle of people on campus can bring joy and memories throughout the semester.
Staying up-to-date on university-wide news and events could help students feel more engaged with campus. Regularly checking emails and messages can be great for staying organized and in the loop. Marquette Today covers various university topics, found on their website and in daily newsletters.
Connecting with college-specific opportunities and resources can be useful academically, professionally and even socially. Staying plugged in to various aspects of campus can open many doors and make students feel more confident.
10. Embrace the personal journey
This semester will look different for every Marquette student. Each individual can try what works best for them and stay true to the priorities, values and habits that will lead to a successful semester.
It’s a 16-week journey that each student can tackle in their own way.
