Marquette will be without one of its key defensive pieces to start the 2018-‘19 season following sophomore Greg Elliott’s thumb injury Oct. 5. He had successful surgery Wednesday afternoon and is expected to return in eight to 12 weeks, according to a team statement.
“We are disappointed for Greg, especially knowing how hard he worked in the offseason to prepare for his sophomore year,” head coach Steve Wojciechowski said in a statement. “We are confident he will apply his tremendous work ethic to his rehabilitation process and get back on the court soon.”
The procedure fixed a torn ligament in his left thumb. He injured the same thumb in 2017 and played through the injury throughout the 2017-‘18 season.
“I hurt it in the Lindenwood exhibition, and it’s been messed up ever since,” Elliott said at the end of last year.
Elliott averaged 18.3 minutes per game and played all 35 games last season. He also made four starts.
