Marquette volleyball remained undefeated in BIG EAST play this season with a 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-13) win over Xavier Wednesday night. The win was Marquette’s fifth in a row.
Marquette dug them themselves into a hole in the first set. After staying close for the first few points of the match, Xavier was able to pull ahead 10-6 and use the padding from that lead to take the set 25-20. It snapped a 12-set Marquette winning streak dating back to the non-conference schedule.
The second set remained close, but after tying the score at 17, Marquette never relinquished the lead again, taking the set 25-22.
The third set was once again tight. With the score tied at 12, Marquette gathered a comfortable lead following a 5-1 run and secured a 25-19 victory.
Allie Barber, Anna Haak and Hope Werch all had double digit kill nights. Barber led the way with 23 kills while hitting .377. She is now hitting .345 for the year.
Freshman libero Martha Konovodoff recorded 24 digs, which was three shy of her career best from earlier this month against IUPUI. Setter Lauren Speckman dished out 51 assists for her fifth match of the year with over 50 assists.
Marquette is back in action on Saturday at 6 p.m. against the DePaul Blue Demons.
