The Marquette women’s volleyball team (23-9, 11-3 Big East) ended its season on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over the Northern Illinois Huskies (27-8, 11-5 Mid-American), surpassing the school’s record 22 wins set in 2004.
The Golden Eagles started off the match with a 5-0 run against Northern Illinois. The Huskies pulled within one point of Marquette at 24-23, but their comeback bid was stamped out when a kill by Marquette junior outside hitter Ciara Jones won the frame.
In the second set, the Golden Eagles jumped out to a 17-11 lead before Northern Illinois rallied to tie the score at 20, eventually pushing out its lead to set-point at 24-20. The teams then traded points until the Huskies landed the 30-28 set win.
Marquette won the third frame easily, by a score of 25-20. In the fourth set Marquette was down 25-24, when junior outside hitter Ashley Beyer recorded three straight kills to give Marquette a 27-25 game victory and a 3-1 match victory.
Marquette was led by Beyer, who recorded 20 kills and 11 digs, and senior setter Nikki Klingsporn, who recorded 56 assists and 13 digs. Jones also had 18 kills.
Northern Illinois was led by freshman middle back Sarah Angelos and freshman outside hitter Lauren Wicinski, who each had 15 kills.
Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, they missed out on the NCAA Tournament, which held its selection show Sunday, ending up the second highest ranked team left out.
Along with its school-record wins total, Marquette also set school records with its 14-match winning streak and a Big East record of 11-3.
