Marquette will fund construction of a new city water main outside the new Law School building.

The Milwaukee Common Council passed a resolution 13-0 Tuesday, moving forward an agreement with the university and the city in which Marquette will bear all construction costs to replace an existing pipeline between Eckstein Hall and the Gesu Parish Center.

The university will pick up around $65,000 in construction, engineering and material costs. It will also pay an additional $17,500 in inspection fees.

The location of the main will be along Michigan Street, adjacent to Eckstein Hall at 11th Street and Clybourn Avenue.

Mike Jahner, project manager from the Office of the University Architect, said the existing water main was located too high, and the university requested the work be done to even out the land and facilitate future endeavors.

“It allows us to redevelop the area between north of Law School and the quad,” Jahner said. “We want to eventually make Michigan Street a nicer boulevard to look at.”

Alderman Bob Bauman, who represents the fourth district that includes Marquette, sponsored the resolution in the Common Council. He said it is not uncommon for private institutions like Marquette to pay for such city improvements.

“The only reason Marquette’s doing it is because of the Law School construction that’s going on,” Bauman said.
