Casual, yet classy. These two words aren’t always associated, but they play well together at the Red Accordion, 1137 N. Old World Third St., a pub and eatery that specializes in tapas.
The restaurant, which opened last November, has a helpful and friendly staff glad to show you around, so make sure you see the whole place before deciding where to sit. The eatery offers a few different spaces, each with its own unique vibe.
The entrance opens into the casual pub area of the restaurant. The dark wood floors and paneling on the walls, accented by red paint and matching red napkins on the tables, immediately give the space a cozy feel.
The bar is a good size, and there’s still room for dining at several tall tables and a few booths. Quotes from varied figures like Lance Armstrong and Homer Simpson line the walls, and pop tunes ranging from the ’90s to the present day add to the casual vibe. Complete with a dart board and five TVs, this is the perfect area to relax and grab some food and drink.
Tucked away in the back end of the restaurant is a quieter dining room. With wood paneling on the walls, red carpets and a fireplace, the space is a little fancier than the bar, but just as cozy. There are both tables for two and tables for larger parties, but space is rather limited, so reservations are recommended.
Separating the two sections is a hall with intimate booths that can be kept private by closing the red curtains that hang at their sides. Each booth includes its own flat-screen TV, so diners can choose to enjoy their program of choice — or turn it off and simply enjoy each other’s company.
The Red Accordion offers a menu of 17 small plates and tapas to choose from, along with six kinds of Milwaukee sliders. The prices, ranging from $5 to $9 per item, aren’t too hard on the wallet individually, but it might get pricey if you bring a large appetite.
The small plates and tapas include meat, fish, seafood and vegetable dishes, so there is sure to be something on the menu for everyone’s tastes. The mini baked meatloaf, $7, strays a bit from the typical homemade meatloaf by adding a little more kick.
The plate is served with two sizeable balls of meatloaf, handmade by the in-house chefs, with a tasty sage sauce poured on top. But what really makes this yummy tapa come together is the layer of corn bread baked over each, balancing the flavor of the meatloaf with the sauce.
For those who prefer fish for dinner, the blackened ahi tuna ($9) is a great dish to start with. Served with a ginger mustard sauce, this zesty item achieves the perfect combination of flavor. It also comes with a chilled cucumber salad, which is delicious either mixed with the tuna and sauce or enjoyed separately.
The sliders portion of the menu also offers lots of options, ranging from the three cheese classic to the Cajun chicken slider, with Rueben, handmade brat patty, ground lamb and spicy bean varieties in between. All are served with fries and are priced at $8.
If you somehow can’t find anything that appeals to you from these choices, the restaurant also offers unique daily specials, adding to the already-plentiful menu.
Once you’ve finished dinner, you have to check out the desserts, all of which are priced at $4. The server brings out a plate with each item arranged on it and gives such detailed descriptions that the choice is a difficult one.
One option is cheesecake lollipops: three balls of completely different cheesecakes, each stuck with wooden “lollipop sticks.” The name makes you want to try them before you even learn what exactly they are.
Yet another is a strawberry mousse pyramid, which perches atop a chocolate brownie. It has hardened chocolate over the mousse to keep the pyramid shape and chocolate drizzle for extra sweetness. Our server said it tastes just like a strawberry milkshake but with a bit more chocolate — and she was definitely right.
