Freshman center Youssoupha Mbao has been sidelined for Marquette’s first two regular season games due to a violation of NCAA amateurism rules.
Prior to Marquette, Mbao was a member of Dunas Hotels Gran Canaria, an overseas team that had a professional player on its roster.
Fortunately for coach Buzz Williams and the Golden Eagles, Mbao will only miss games against Centenary and Maryland Eastern Shore. There were rumors he could have been ineligible for up to eight games.
The 7-foot-2 center was Williams’ final recruit of the incoming class and is known for his rebounding and shot-blocking ability.
Mbao will, however, be allowed to participate in the Golden Eagle’s exhibition match against MSOE on Nov. 7. The first regular season game Mbao will suit up for will be against Grambling State on Nov. 21.
