I’m sure we all remember learning CPR in high school health or gym class. At my high school, we watched videos from the 1980s – I’m just guessing based on their hair and fashions – and most of us thought it was pretty lame. I’m also pretty sure I would not have remembered what to do in a real emergency. But all that is changing. CPR is now being taught using the Bee Gee’s classic disco tune ‘Stayin’ Alive.” Apparently the song has the same beat and rhythm as chest compressions are supposed to. Time magazine reported that a study by 15 doctors found that teaching CPR with “Stayin’ Alive” helped students find the right speed for chest compressions and helped them remember that speed on a certification test five weeks later. Check out the video Stayin\’ Alive CPR on YouTube. This sounds like a great teaching method, especially because almost everyone has heard the song and can instantly think of the tune – I have it stuck in my head right now.
