As students get back into the comfortable normalcy of college life, the once idolized resolutions of New Years may begin to fade away. While these seemingly obtainable goals seemed doable back on Jan. 1, today the thoughts of self-improvement are looking a humorous idea. But despite popular belief, sticking to your New Years resolutions is not impossible, and can be conquered before the clock strikes midnight on Dec. 31.
- Find a Friend: Training for a 5K, reading a novel, or learning a new language will be easier if you have a friend nearby with similar goals. “My best friend and I are working together to read more this year,” biomedical sciences major Caitlin Gallagher said. “We can count on one another, and it really just makes the process more fun.” With someone holding you accountable, New Years goals can become a part of your daily schedule. By paring up, the task at hand becomes a fun, social experience as opposed to dreadful hours spent loathing. Plus, the odds are much more likely for you to stick to the objective if you have a little competition.
- Keep it all in check: While it might be nice to shed a large amount of weight or travel abroad to several different countries, it’s important that your goals are realistic. By setting goals that you are likely to complete, you have less of a chance of disappointment. “I picked resolutions that I knew I would get done,” accounting major Vince Van Dyke said. “I’m learning the guitar and becoming healthier. I knew I’d never get around to finishing any bigger tasks.” It’s beneficial to set high standards for yourself, but reality is necessary when attempting any form of self-improvement. Try to pick resolutions you can handle.
- Be Regimented: The most dedicated and organized New Years resolutionist cannot keep up without an agenda. Earning straight A’s or quitting a bad habit won’t just happen by working on it occasionally. “I’m working on going to the gym more this year,” finance major Michael Lencioni said. “I’ve planned my classes around going to work out.” Grab a planner and some colorful pens and take the time to dedicate hours to just working on yourself.
