Another week of the NFL season, another last second victory for the Giants, and another late game defeat for the Cowboys, which seems to be the theme for both teams the last few teams. The rivalry is kind of ironic to be honest. You could argue that Tony Romo and Eli Manning are basically just as talented as eachother. Obviously, you’d give the edge to Manning because of the rings, but he’s not much better of a passer. But the way most people look at it is that Eli Manning is one of the most clutch players in the game and Tony Romo is one of the least clutch. Late in the game, Tony Romo threw an interception. Of course he did, but he didn’t really have a choice on fourth down to try and force something. Miraculously, he had another chance, and hooked up with Dez Bryant for a late game almost touchdown. It seems like almost can be the definition of Romo’s time in Dallas, and is the major difference between these two teams. Two teams that are just as talented as each other, but in recent years, the story of the Cowboys has been full of what-ifs? and the story of the Giants is filled with whats next?
Dallas isn’t the only talented NFC East team in turmoil. Philadelphia is an absolute mess this season. Michael Vick and the birds lost another game this week, and the question of whether Andy Reid should bench his quarterback or not was asked many times. Why? Vick isn’t having a good season by any means. But its not like the last Eagles quarterbacks situations – McNabb has Kolb behind him, and Kolb had Vick behind him. There was real controversy. Who could step in for Vick right now? Nick Foles? Trent Edwards? Stop this. The Eagles have no choice but to just sit back and let Vick and Reid try to fix it themselves, with the same personel they have now. Maybe they can make a playoff run like they did late in the season last year? Who knows! All we do know is that Michael Vick gives them the best chance to win, and there really isn’t a discussion about it.
Its going to be a very interesting playoff race in the AFC this year. Because everybody sucks. The Jets we’re my favorite to gain the final wild card spot before this week, but my opinion has changed. Sanchez and compony we’re blown out at home against the Dolphins. Sanchez is clearly done after this season in New York, so why not give Tebow a shot? Its not like he’s Nick Foles – Tebow isn’t a proven NFL quarterback, but hes proven that he can win games in the NFL, and hes clearly shown that he has a clutch gene and killer instincts late in the game. Worst case scenario? It doesn’t work out, both guys are gone at the end of the year. Best case scenario? Playoffs. Why not Rex? As for my favorite to earn the sixth seed, the Colts and Dolphins are the only teams that even look decent in the depths of the AFC. I like the talent better on Miami simply because of a solid defense, but I’ll take Indianapolis here. Andrew Luck and the Colts have been playing inspired football this season, and with a playoff berth is very well in reach, their going to keep playing inspired football.
The Michael Vick Award for Best Performance goes to Tom Brady. Brady gave London a showing for the ages, torching the Rams for 304 yards and 4 touchdowns. Brady exposed the Rams as being the same old rams this week. Brady showed the world that the Patriots offense is still an elite force in the NFL. By the way, did anybody else find it ironic that fans in London we’re routing for the Patriots? Honorable mention goes to Alex Smith, who played nearly perfect this week.
The Kyle Orton Award for Worst Performance goes to Michael Turner. The Falcons let Turner work this week, and he made them proud; 24 carries for 58 yards, with an outstanding 2.4 YPC! Kidding. Turner isn’t in danger to lose the starting job, but he’s clearly not the back he used to be, and hasn’t had a very good season all around. Don’t worry Michael, Cam Newton is still dominating in the chase for the Caleb Hanie Award race.
The Golden Tate Award for Most Deceiving Performance goes to Jamal Charles. Charles had five carries for four yards in a loss to Oakland. Awful? Yes. But why did they only give him five touches? Romeo Crennel wasn’t even sure about it. He’s the teams only good player basically, and he should be getting the ball as much as humanly possible. Explains why the Chiefs are far and away the worst team in the NFL.
