As we all very well know (and freshmen will come to learn), Milwaukee is one heck of a windy city in the fall/winter season. I personally always struggle with wind-proofing my look, but over the years, I’ve accumulated some good pointers. The key to always looking put together, even when you’re not: bed-head up-dos, skinny jeans, a structured jacket, and colorful lips.
Let’s face it: the wind is GOING to mess up your hair. That’s why I usually don’t even bother trying to smooth mine down or de-frizz it if I know the weather is going to be icky. My trick? An intentionally messy up-do.
“The Double Knot”
How to:
1. Spritz your hair all over with sea-salt spray or volumizer.
2. Scrunch your hair into bunches while drying to keep texture in.
3. Pull a thick section of hair out at the front, sweeping it into a deep side part.
4. Take the back sections of hair and tie it into a knot, then a double knot.
5. Secure knot and spray a little hairspray over it all for hold.

Well, now that your hair’s done, let’s talk about outerwear.
A structured coat is a must for the season, like this plaid beauty from Burberry. And then it doesn’t even matter if you haven’t had time to do laundry in three weeks. You can be wearing a ratty t-shirt underneath and no one will even know.
A higher-quality material, like heavy wool, will not only keep you uber-warm, but it will last you years! A really good coat is definitely an investment – but by no means do you have to shop designer. There’s a TON of affordable options out there if you know where to look! I love this “Josie Coat” from BB Dakota.
To finish off your outfit, throw on some skinny jeans and the shoe of your choice—boots, flats, heels, anything works! Swipe on your shade of red or plum lipcolor (like the one featured at Yves Saint Laurent below) and you’re ready to for anything: work, shopping, coffee-drinking, studying with friends, or making an impression on that hottie in psych. Feel free to throw on any accessories that make your look totally you.
And remember: confidence is the ultimate accessory. Own it!
