Kayl Petersen is finally putting on a Marquette jersey — three years later than originally intended.
Petersen, a member of the Golden Eagles’ 2024 recruiting class, followed former head coach Megan Duffy from Milwaukee to Virginia Tech, where she played the last two seasons.
Friday morning, Petersen announced her commitment to Marquette for the 2026-27 season with an Instagram post captioned: “God’s timing > my timing. Back where I belong.”

Petersen is the third Golden Eagle commitment in as many days, joining incoming first-year Kinley Asp and former South Florida wing Brooklyn Hall. The 6-foot-0 forward is head coach Cara Consuegra first front court signee this offseason, a much-needed addition after she lost all her post players — including last year’s leading scorer Skylar Forbes.
In her first season as a Hokie, Petersen averaged 4.2 points and 2.9 rebounds per game. But, both of those statistics decreased in her sophomore season, so 2.2 points and 2.8 boards. Over both years, Petersen averaged just over 13 minutes per game.
Now, she is back home, barely over an hour away from her native Waupun, Wis. and set to play on the Al McGuire Court — only with Consuegra on the sideline.
Marquette now has seven open scholarship spots for next season.
