Marquette University is utilizing new technology in the nursing program. This semester the senior class will be implementing Epic, an electronic health system based in Wisconsin, that is nationally used as a charting system.
Jill Guttormson, dean of the College of Nursing, said that the system is used by 80% of the healthcare market. The Epic system is used to record all the health data of a patient.
“We will use it in simulation and in coursework,” Guttormson said. “All health history is documented there, vital signs, medications, everything that happens when a patient goes into the hospital … that’s where all the information lives.”
Guttormson said that the system is being used in order to prepare students for an easier transition into the workforce.
MyChart , the patient side of Epic, allows patients to see their medications, test results, medical bills and more.
The Epic system is also utilized by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and other University of Wisconsin System schools.
Guttormson said that the current nursing students in clinical studies only have the student version of Epic, so she is excited to introduce the full nurse capacity for them to use in simulations.
“Epic is an amazing platform, and healthcare is complex so documentation is complex. There are so many different pages of information that you go through to get the whole story of the patient,” Guttormson said.
