The 19/18 Marquette Golden Eagles (3-2) extended its losing streak to two games after getting clobbered 12-2 by the Robert Morris Colonials (4-2) at Valley Fields.
The Colonials dominated the game right out of the gate, ending the first quarter with a staggering 7-0 lead. Although the Golden Eagles were able to solve early problems defensively, the second quarter wasn’t much different offensively as the teams split a pair of goals heading into halftime at 8-1.
Defensively, Marquette were out of sync the entire first half, allowing Colonial attackers to continuously split the defense and find the back of the net on open shots. It was a trend they would not be able to fix the remainder of the afternoon.
The second half did not fare much better for the Golden Eagles as they gave up four goals and only managed to notch one goal on their own end, leading to 10-goal loss.
For Robert Morris, it was sophomore attackman Ryan Smith and redshirt junior attackman Matt Schmidt, who led the Colonials with two goals each. Robert Morris also had eight different scorers get on the scoresheet.
Marquette’s two goals came sophomore midfielder Ryan Fazio, and freshman attackman, Anthony Orsini. The Golden Eagles offense stalled numerous times on the day, as they had just 30 shots, forcing 12 saves.
This was Marquette’s second straight loss following last week’s upset to Bellarmine in the Midwest Lacrosse Classic.
Marquette will return to action next Saturday afternoon in Ann Arbor, Michigan for a battle against the Michigan Wolverines. Face-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
