Marquette’s upset bid of No. 6 Creighton ended in the 81st minute, as Ricardo Perez lifted the Bluejays to a 2-1 victory with a a deflected free kick shot that ricocheted off the right post.
The goal was Perez’s second of the night, as he scored in the 37th minute off a rebound which led to a tough outcome for a Marquette team that made quite a push in the second half. After getting outshot nine to zero in the first half, the Golden Eagles edged Creighton eight to three in the second.
Marquette scored the equalizer in the 72nd minute, as Jan Maertins was able to beat the Creighton keeper off a cross from Luka Prpa.
Marquette has now gone eight games without a victory dating back to a Sept. 5 win against Northwestern.
Marquette’s tough schedule continues Saturday when the Golden Eagles host Xavier. The Musketeers are receiving votes in the NSCAA Coaches’ Poll and trail only Creighton in the conference standings.
