Mission Week 2015 kicks-off Feb. 1, with a week of keynote speakers, reflections and discussions centered around a quest for the common good.
The week’s theme is “Who Cares? Charity, Justice and the Quest for the Common Good.” Mission Week is “Marquette’s annual exploration of our university’s Catholic, Jesuit intellectual mission and how that mission might be stretched even further for the good of the human community,” according to the university’s website.
“The weeklong slate of activities and events is a great way for students to connect with Marquette’s mission and the life-changing impact CRS is making across the world,” said Chris Jeske, associate director for the Center for Peacemaking, in an email.
Carolyn Woo, president and CEO of Catholic Relief Services, will give the opening keynote Feb. 2 in the Weasler Auditorium. She’ll discuss how the Marquette community can make a significant impact in the lives of those who are under-served.
The Feb. 3 event “Go for the Gold with Your Life!” will feature two CRS spokespeople and Olympic speed skater Bonnie Blair, who will discuss how she works to advance the common good in others. Accompanying Blair is actress Catherine Hicks, star of 7th Heaven. Hicks will discuss how being a public figure plays a role in fighting for a better world. The talk will be in the Alumni Memorial Union’s Monaghan Ballrooms.
The closing keynote address will feature CRS leaders Vanessa Tobin and Mwayabo Jean Claude Kazadi. They will present “Bringing it Home: Connecting the Work of CRS to Marquette” and discuss why being the difference is imperative in today’s world. It will be hosted Feb. 5 in the Weasler Auditorium.
Mission Week will continue into Feb. 6 with events including “One on the Journey: A Solidarity Walk with Catholic Relief Services” and “Ignatian Examination of Consciousness: Reflecting Together on the Mission Week Experience.”
