The Dallas Cowboys had a rough week. After placing the yoke of high expectations around the players’ necks— expectations brought about by nothing more than being the hosts of Super Bowl XLV— the fan base’s high hopes crumbled, at least for the week, following an embarrassing showing against the rival Washington Redskins.
Not to take away anything from the Redskins defense, but Dallas obviously devoted extra time in practice last week to finding new ways to lose. Botching the snap on an extra point attempt in a playoff game is so overdone.
Calling a five-yard shovel pass on the last play of the first half from your own 36-yard-line, though? Now that’s innovation.
The bad play call alone wasn’t enough. Instead of falling to the ground when surrounded by tacklers 64 yards from the goal line, ironically-named Tashard Choice thought it’d be a good idea to try and run through all 11 Washington tacklers. That’s the kind of stupid play that transcends generations and costs teams football games.
But that was just the first act in this Cowboy comedy.
Tony Romo drove his team down the field at the end of the game, needing a touchdown to steal the win. From the 13 yard-line, Romo threw the game-winning touchdown to much-maligned wideout Roy Williams.
With a clothesline that would make the Ultimate Warrior envious, offensive tackle Alex Barron got caught for holding on the final play, wiping away the game-winning score and giving people like me who love to hate the Cowboys even more ammunition to use against “America’s Team.”
