Senior high jumper Erynn James came up short in her final attempt to automatically qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships this upcoming weekend.
At the Alex Wilson Invitational this past weekend, James mustered up a jump of 5 feet 7 1/4 inches. That mark left her short of the 6 feet 83/100 inch mark necessary to automatically qualify for the NCAA.
At the Milwaukee Dual Meet on Jan. 23, James reached the provisional qualifying mark to qualify for the NCAAs (5 feet 10 inches). To ensure an invite to the NCAA, James needed to reach the automatic qualifying mark of 6 feet 83/100 inches.
Her failure to reach that mark leaves James on a list of available participants to compete in the NCAA. Coach Bert Rogers doesn’t expect James to get an invite because only the 16 to 20 best high jumpers are invited, he said. James’ mark from Jan. 23 leaves her around 34th best in the country.
