The Marquette men’s club soccer team played to two 1-1 draws over the weekend against Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Wisconsin-Lacrosse.
Club vice president Dave Kirschling saved the game against UW-Milwaukee Saturday night, tying the score 1-1 with five minutes left on the clock.
Even though the majority of the game was played in the Marquette defense and goal area, the team successfully blocked nearly every attempt on goal, keeping the game scoreless for most of the game.
UW-Milwaukee scored with 13 minutes left in the game, changing the mood of the game and the audience.
“When UWM scored we responded exactly how we needed to and really gave our all to get back on level terms,” club president Grant White said. “We knew based on how well we had been playing up to that point we could do it.”
After UW-Milwaukee’s goal, Marquette controlled possession of the ball. Within eight minutes, Marquette made two attempts at a goal. The first was a miss. The second was put away by Kirschling to tie the game.
“The ball came in low, I just got a touch on the ball and redirected it into the net,” Kirschling said. “After I saw the ball go into the net I was so happy that we were able to tie the game.”
The Marquette team was not the only one with high emotions that night. Even though the temperature was 31 degrees, it did not deter a crowd of nearly 40 people to come out and root on both teams.
“I would also like to thank all the fans that braved the freezing temperatures at our game,” Kirschling said. “We really appreciate all the support.”
Sunday morning, Marquette made another impressive comeback against UW-Lacrosse. During the first half, a goal was taken away because the ball was said to have been out of bounds before the goal was made. Then with a minute left in the game, Marquette scored, tying the game 1-1.
Three key games are left in the season, and if Marquette can come out ahead in those contests, it has a good shot of going to regionals, White said.
