Sal's Pizzeria opened shop under the 2040 Lofts Dec. 26, 2007. With 13 different pizzas by the slice, whole pizzas, pastas, subs, calzones and stromboli, Sal's is sure to be a hit among students.
The recipe for Sal's pizza has made the long journey from Sicily all the way to Milwaukee. Owner Fini Elmazi immigrated to the United States in 1988 and followed in his father Sal's footsteps by making New York style pizza. The first Sal's Pizzerias to open were in Atlantic City, N.J. and Manhattan, N.Y.
After visiting his brother in Madison, Wis., Elmazi decided to take the family business into the Midwest by opening a Sal's Pizzeria in Madison. Recent construction in Madison forced Elmazi to relocate to Milwaukee.
Along with the pizza, Elmazi brought the look and feel of Sicily to his restaurant thanks to red and white floor tiles and green upholstered chairs.
Fast service at Sal's Pizzeria is something Elmazi believes will be just what Marquette students are looking for late weeknights and the weekend. The store is open until 3 a.m. on weekends and 11 p.m. on weeknights. Sal's Pizzeria is an excellent alternative to the other late night food joints on campus like Jimmy John's, Papa John's, Marquette Gyros and Real Chili.
"Customers have a choice between lots of different pizza and you can get it by the slice so there's no waiting 15 to 20 minutes for it," Elmazi said. "It takes only a couple minutes."
Pizza by the slice is the restaurant's specialty, but 14-inch mediums and 18-inch larges are available. Sal's Pizzeria also delivers for no extra charge with a delivery area covering the entire Marquette area.
Including the classics like cheese, sausage and pepperoni pizza, Sal's Pizzeria offers a smorgasbord of pizzas to choose from for the adventurous pizza consumer.
"The kids around here like BBQ Chicken pizza, lasagna pizza, chicken primavera pizza, the stuffed spinach pizza and stuffed pepperoni pizza," Elmazi said. "Cheese is always a top choice too."
Any stop at Sal's Pizzeria is also worth trying out its signature creation, the garlic nut. The garlic encrusted bread roll is fresh baked and serves as the perfect compliment to any slice of Sal's pizza.
Currently, Sal's Pizzeria does not accept MarquetteCash, but Elmazi said the restaurant will eventually accept it.
Specials right now are $5 off the purchase of two 18-inch large pizzas and $3 off the purchase of two 14-inch medium pizzas.
