Fighting Irish reach century mark … finally

The last time the Fighting Irish reached the century mark was against Cleveland State, almost six years ago, when they scored 107 points.

Notre Dame led the Hoyas by six going into the second half, but they quickly extended their lead with a 24-10 surge after Brittany Mallory's three-point play off a fastbreak layup.

Mallory, a freshman reserve, scored 15 points on the night, while senior and point-leader Charel Allen finished with 14 for the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame shot 72 percent from the field in the second half.

Big Impact

A big reason West Virginia (14-3, 4-1 Big East) holds a No. 12 ranking and is second in the conference standings has been the play of Olayinka Sanni. The senior center was named Big East Player of the Week after averaging 21.5 points and 15.5 rebounds in two wins last week over Marquette (68-63) and St. John's (68-44).

Sanni shot 57.1 percent from the field (16-for-28) and made 11 of 13 free throws in the two victories. On the season, she is averaging 17.6 points per game (fifth in the Big East) and is shooting 59.6 percent from the field (third in the Big East).

Big East Bumpin'

The Big East currently has more ranked teams in the Associated Press Top 25 poll than any other conference in the NCAA.

Six Big East teams—Connecticut (1), Rutgers (5), West Virginia (12), Notre Dame (16), Pittsburgh (19), Syracuse (24)—are ranked. Syracuse finds itself ranked for the first time in its 37-year history.

UConn's undefeated start to the season, Rutgers' 11-game winning streak and West Virginia's recent upset over then-No. 14 Notre Dame have allowed these Big East teams to retain their top spots in the rankings. The SEC is the closest to the Big East with four teams in the Top 25.
