While the quips of our 43rd president are rather amusing at times, presidents should not be judged solely on their ability to speak publicly.,”As a frequent reader of The Marquette Tribune, I've always noted the lack of balance in Mr. Eric Lombardi's work. However, his Jan. 15 article, "Is another war on the way?" crossed the boundary of reasonably opinionated journalism.
When Bush speaks clearly and deliberately on Iran, somehow Mr. Lombardi loses perspective on who's generally right and who's generally wrong. The government of Iran costs the lives of its own citizens, our soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen, and the possibility of its causing the loss of life on a massive scale is just too real to overlook. What's different about this situation and that of Iraq is that most of the world actually agrees with us (except for Iran's trade partners: Russia and China)!
Aversion to war with Iran has caused reluctance among Americans to admit that Iran actually does fund aggression against the United States and our allies. Explosively-formed penetrators (EFPs), responsible for the deaths of countless American servicemen, are found all around Iraq and Afghanistan. The particular kind of EFP being used against Americans is of Iranian design.
How much evidence does one need to use the word "verified", or is it just Mr. Lombardi's preference to remain contradictory to Mr. Bush, no matter how "verified" things are?
I suppose that Mr. Lombardi is reasonable enough to understand that war should always be an option of foreign policy, especially if, say, a particular country executes homosexuals just for being who they are, or they're killing our fellow Americans. Oh, wait, that's the Islamic "Republic" of Iran, a country run by leaders that Mr. Lombardi and the apathetic left are very reluctant to label as evil.
Iran is profiting off the chaos in Iraq and they want to see it continue; is that not evil? Tehran hates the prospect of a stable and prosperous Iraq. Take off your donkey blinders Mr. Lombardi, and see the situation for what it really is.
Another war would certainly be tragic, and the three servicemen in my family would most certainly be caught up in it. But when Iran constantly advocates the destruction of Israel, questions the validity of the Holocaust as a pretext to Israel's elimination, harasses American warships in innocent passage in international waters and supplies weapons to insurgents in Iraq to kill my fellow Americans, I will support the option of war.
