Usually I take no part in discussions on fashion. However, there needs to be a discussion on the fashion, or rather lack thereof here at Marquette.
I am not looking for anyone to be the next Ralph Lauren or a famous fashion expert. I have just seen too many people who want to be with the "in crowd" but come off as a bunch of posers and clowns. The simplest outfit can be stylish if you have an ounce of class.
The fashion disaster that has been haunting women for the last few years are those horrible Ugg boots. These monstrosities have made their winter reappearance year after year as a sight for sore eyes.
They are the anti-fashion statement because they are the most ugly boots ever created. Women who wear these boots are destroying the moral fabric of this country. They need to be stopped by anyone who loves freedom.
That is not the only thing that needs to be removed from women's fashion sources. I'm beginning to think that a funhouse mirror resides in some women's homes that is causing them to wear things they should not. The reason low-rise jeans look good on Beyoncé and not you are because she is Beyoncé. Your body was not meant to wear those jeans so please spare us from a ghastly site.
I admit that men are not innocent in this crime of terrible fashion. The rise in the popularity of Swagger-jackers is the result of men who blatantly steal the style of other men. This is causing some men to look like clowns. I do not know how many people I have seen trying to imitate Kanye West and failing miserably.
Wearing blazers with sweatpants and combat boots is not cool—it is a total embarrassment. However, this look is not the fatal flaw in new men's fashion. No, the title for worst male fashion statement goes to the skinny jeans.
Men have taken to wearing skinny jeans of late. What are skinny jeans? Skinny jeans are jeans that are so slim that men must oil up before slipping into them, and they are usually found in the women's department where they belong.
I have asked women their opinion on skinny jeans on men and the response was not positive.
Whitney Taylor, a junior in the College of Communication, is no fan of skinny jeans on men. "I think that it can't be healthy to have your body all compressed like that," she said.
I agree and I feel the birthrate in the U.S. will decline as a result of skinny jeans.
However, there are good fashion trends that people are following that I encourage.
Women with the cashmere sweaters and straight leg jeans combination are supporting a trend that needs to continue. Cocktail dresses are also in this year and are aesthetically appealing.
The men are doing well with the classy cashmere, three-quarter length wool coats. They go well with vintage newsboy caps.
The fashion-conscious people must be wary of the classless slobs who will despise them because they cannot coordinate a T-shirt and jeans. They will hate your fashion expertise because they hate everything from oceans and sunsets to dolphins and rainbows. These are the type of people that will harass you anonymously over Facebook about your choice of clothing.
The reality of the situation is people in general need to step up their fashion game. The Ugg boots, skinny jeans and other monstrosities need to go and sensibility needs to return. The overindulgence of looking like someone else and the pure laziness in appearance by some has destroyed what fashion should truly convey.
It is an expression of the image you are trying to convey to the world. If it's T-shirt and jeans or if it's a three-piece suit, keep it classy. Please people; keep the monkey suits in the closet, you are embarrassing yourself.
