According to a Department of Public Safety report, an unidentified subject approached the 18-year-old man in a dark alley around 11:15 p.m. The victim, who lives on Michigan Street, decided to cut through the alleyway in the 2000 block of West Wisconsin Avenue.
The suspect then approached the victim and implied that he had a knife, the report said. Although no weapon was actually seen, the victim handed over his property to the suspect.
The suspect took the victim's backpack, which contained $350 in cash and other property valued at almost $200, according to the report.
Capt. Russ Shaw, associate director of DPS, said the victim first called MPD, which then alerted them of the incident.
Shaw said while the victim was not a Marquette student and no university property was stolen, DPS officers still responded and filed a report because the crime occurred within their patrol boundaries.
"Our goal is to make the students aware of these types of issues, and that's really the important thing," Shaw said.
