The fire began in the bedroom of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity house, said Sara Kuhl, UW-Whitewater director of marketing and media relations.
Bruce Bukowski, the faculty adviser for Tau Kappa Epsilon, said all 10 men who were home at the time of the blaze escaped relatively unharmed.
Kuhl said one student was treated on the scene for mild smoke inhalation, minor cuts and bruises, but no other injuries were reported.
Bukowski said the unofficial source of the fire is electrical.
"The men lost everything." Bukowski said. "Computers, schoolbooks and clothing-everything. There was an estimated $300,000 worth of damage."
He said the building would have to be gutted and rebuilt before students would be allowed to return.
In an effort to help the students finish out the semester, the faculty and staff at UW-Whitewater will make the necessary arrangements to help the members of the fraternity, Bukowski said.
Kuhl said the Greek community is pulling together and organizing a food and clothing drive for Tau Kappa Epsilon.
The drive will take place Wednesday, Nov. 14 at the Whitewater Leadership Development Office, she said.
