The men's soccer team needed a win against No. 2 Connecticut on Saturday night to keep its Big East Tournament hopes alive, and it nearly got one. Playing in Storrs, Conn., the Golden Eagles dropped a 2-1 decision in overtime, eliminating them from conference tournament consideration.
The Huskies jumped out first in the game's ninth minute when midfielder Chukwudi Chijindu netted his sixth goal of the season. Marquette trailed until the 87th minute when sophomore Nick Kay headed in his team-leading fourth goal of the year off assists by senior Mike Carlson and sophomore Billy Von Rueden.
Connecticut midfielder Ryan Cordeiro scored from five yards out after six minutes of overtime to drop Marquette's season record to 2-11-3, including a 1-8-1 mark in Big East play. Connecticut improved to 14-2-1 with a 7-2-1 record in conference.
