Around 1:20 a.m., a student witnessed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed in the 800 block of North 17th Street, according to the report. The witness said the vehicle then went onto the sidewalk and drove into a tree and two light poles, causing significant amount of damage to the front end of the vehicle. The collision also damaged power lines.
According to the report, the subject, a 23-year-old male not affiliated with Marquette, left the scene. He was then observed kicking the front end of his vehicle in the Open Pantry, 1624 W. Wells St. parking lot.
DPS then approached the suspect in the parking lot, said Capt. Russ Shaw, associate director of DPS. However, the suspect began to run when the Milwaukee Police Department arrived on the scene.
After a brief foot chase, the suspect was located and physically detained by DPS, the report said. MPD took the suspect into custody for outstanding warrants in addition to the hit-and-run.
According to Shaw, the scene was immediately secured by DPS because of the danger presented from the fallen power lines. The damage has since been repaired by the City of Milwaukee, Shaw said.
