According to Capt. Russ Shaw, associate director of DPS, the suspect, a 17-year-old man not affliliated with Marquette, approached two 19-year-old men not affiliated with Marquette in the 900 block of North Renee Street around 10:30 p.m. The suspect then produced what the victims thought was a small handgun, reports said.
Shaw said the apparent weapon was actually a cigarette lighter that resembled a handgun and was found on the suspect when he was detained.
"All the suspect managed to get was $5," Shaw said. "The victims then managed to flag down one of our officers on patrol and give them a description."
Shaw said the suspect was found and detained by DPS at a bus stop on the corner of North 17th Street and West State Street about five minutes later. According to the report, the Milwaukee Police Department then took the suspect into custody.
This was the second robbery reported to DPS this semester.
According to Shaw, in both incidents suspects have been detained as a result of DPS responses.
