"I thought Marquette played well," said UConn coach Glenn Marshall.,”While most of the Marquette campus was still sleeping, the No. 75 women's tennis team was hard at work, completing a 7-0 sweep of Big East rival Connecticut Sunday morning. The win improves the Golden Eagles to 11-5 on the year.
"I thought Marquette played well," said UConn coach Glenn Marshall. "They're obviously a very good team and very consistent."
Coming off yesterday's loss to Illinois, it wasn't the usual lineup for Jody Bronson's team. With regulars Paola Calderon and Rachael Hush sidelined with injury problems, several squad members were thrust into action.
"We knew with injuries we had to come out and win every point," said senior Robin Metzler, who won her match 6-2, 6-1.
A last minute addition to the starting squad, junior Elly Strother excelled in No. 6 singles, winning 6-1, 6-0.
"It was a good opportunity to work on things," Strother said. "It felt good to get a win under my belt."
After her 10-game winning streak was snapped Saturday, freshman Olga Fischer got back on the right track, winning her No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-3 over UConn ace Kelley LoRusso.
"It's important for me to get confident," Fischer said. "I'm glad that I won. I feel better."
Coach Bronson stressed the energy and communication skills of her team.
"We just came out and tried to stay focused," Bronson said. "And I think we did."
It was never going to be UConn's day, as they were dealing with injury problems of their own. But Marquette came out with more energy and determination and outworked their opponent. The Huskies were shell-shocked, and looked visibly frustrated and dejected at times.
After a weekend of tough competition, Bronson said her team is looking forward to getting some rest. With midterms this week, the players are going to get a couple days off.
"We're just trying to pace it and avoid more injuries," she said.
The team returns to action a week from Monday when they travel to Birmingham, Ala. to take on Samford University.
