Olga Fischer finds success on tennis team

Zehn.

In German, that is how many consecutive singles matches (10) freshman and Berlin native Olga Fischer has won this season. Fischer will look to extend her streak when the No. 75 Marquette women's tennis team faces No. 33 Illinois and Connecticut this weekend.

Coach Jody Bronson said she's impressed with the young player's performance.

"It's awesome. That's not easy to do," Bronson said. "She goes out there and if you just watch her, she's so focused on what she's trying to do. I think, because she's able to focus like that, that has helped her success."

Fischer did not join the team until January and was almost immediately thrust into the top of the lineup. After dropping an early match to Michigan at No. 4 singles, she won her next 10, playing primarily in the No. 2 slot.

Fischer, who is still learning English, said she has an appetite for victory.

"I'm very hungry," she said. "It's my first season, so I've tried to do my best. "

Fischer's continued production will be vital for a team looking for a high seed in the Big East tournament. Following Connecitcut this weekend, the Golden Eagles still face St. John's, No. 41 DePaul and No. 5 Notre Dame to close out conference play.

Bronson said the team is focused on staying near the top of the conference.

"We're playing for the seed in our conference tournament," Bronson said. "We don't all play each other, so you really can't afford to stumble."

Marquette will also benefit down the stretch from two key players returning from injury. Junior Kylie Moore, who retired from her singles match against Wisconsin with a knee injury, returned to singles and doubles play versus Rutgers last weekend.

Bronson said the team will do whatever is necessary to keep Moore in the lineup.

"We just have to try to create the environment where she's going to be able to compete a lot for us," she said. "Whether that means a day or two off practice so she can compete, then that's what we're going to have to do. We need her out there."

Sophomore Rachael Hush returned from an injured rotator cuff to notch a win with freshman sister Gillian at No. 3 doubles against the Scarlet Knights. She said she hopes to be in the singles lineup versus Illinois.

"I'm ready to get out there and play," Hush said. "I'm feeling about 100 percent."

To get a win against the No. 33 Illini every player will have to play at a high level, Bronson said.

"We're going to have to bring our best tennis," she said. "For us, what that means is our preparation to strike the ball has to be really good, our strategy has to be really good, our confidence has to be there and we just have to believe that we can beat a team as good as Illinois."

Marquette faces Illinois on Saturday at 11 a.m. and Connecticut Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
