A fire broke out at 4 p.m. at the construction site of Marquette's new Law School, Eckstein Hall, located south of Gesu Church.
The fire is reported contained, according to a university emergency alert text message sent to students at 6:42 p.m.
Milwaukee Fire Department Batallion Chief Michael Labinski said the fire started at a break in a line from one of three 1,000 gallon propane tanks at the site. The three tanks were interconnected. Firefighters were waiting for the gas to burn itself out.
Six workers were at the construction site when the fire broke out before 4 p.m. Three workers inside a trailer heard a hissing noise and went outside to see flames coming from the propane tanks and its tubing, Labinski said.
All six workers were taken safely off-site. No injuries were reported, according to Brigid O'Brien Miller, director of university communication.
At one point Tuesday afternoon, two MFD ladders with hoses above the construction site doused the flames. Labinski said it was a single-alarm fire.
Shortly after 4 p.m. as firefighters were arriving on scene, Department of Public Safety officers were cordoning off the area near the construction site. DPS Chief Larry Rickard told the Tribune he was worried about the possibility of a tank exploding and sending shrapnel flying.
The Haggerty Art Museum was fully evacuated. Straz Hall, O'Hara Hall and Gesu Parish Center were partially evacuated, Miller said.
Classes in Straz Hall were canceled for the evening. The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra concert in Gesu was also canceled. The MSO reception was moved to the Lunda Room in the Alumni Memorial Union.
Miller said it is too soon to tell the effect the fire will have on construction of the new Law School.
