The win was the first on the season for the Golden Eagles against a ranked opponent. Last month, the team dropped matches to the 19th ranked University of Michigan and 30th ranked Indiana University.

Bronson said team chemistry was a key to the team's victory.

"As talented as they are, I also think their chemistry is a huge part of it," she said. "They really believe in each other, and I just totally felt it out there today."

Leading the way for the Golden Eagles were freshmen Paola Calderon and Olga Fischer. Calderon registered a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles and Fischer won 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2 singles slot.

Fischer said confidence played a major role in the win.

"We've played played aggressively and believed in each other," Fischer said.

Head Coach Jody Bronson lauded their performances after the match.

"Both of them winning as freshmen at one and two versus a ranked team, that's incredible," Bronson said.

Marquette also picked up wins with junior Kylie Moore at No. 5 singles (6-2, 6-1) and senior Robin Metzler at No. 6 singles.

At No. 3 singles, sophomore Christina Ruiz lost a tough three-set match, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. The third set of the hard-fought match raged on after the day's contest was already decided.

Sisters Rachael and Gillian Hush picked up the team's only win at doubles, topping the Cardinals in the No. 3 slot, 8-2. Rachel, a sophomore, and Gillian, a freshman, are 3-1 on the season when paired together.

The Golden Eagles next face the 61st ranked University of Iowa at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium on Sunday at 11 a.m.
