A 46-year-old man not affiliated with Marquette was taken into custody by Milwaukee police for entering a local resident's apartment Tuesday afternoon.
According to Department of Public Safety Lt. Paul Mascari, the suspect was attempting to get into the first floor apartment of a 25-year-old man not affiliated with the university. The incident took place at the Union Apartments, 846 N. 15th St., Tuesday at 4:41 p.m.
The victim, John Degenhardt, was sitting in his apartment when the incident took place. His apartment door was open when the suspect entered the building.
"The guy shut the door to the apartment, opened it again, and walked into the apartment without saying anything," said Degenhardt, who was with his girlfriend, a Marquette student.
Degenhardt said the man appeared to be homeless.
He said he told the man, "What the hell are you doing in my apartment?"
When the suspect didn't respond, he chased the man outside the building and wrestled him to the ground until DPS officers arrived on the scene, he said.
"I chased him outside and put him in a chokehold, and I basically tried to restrain him until the authorities arrived," Degenhardt said.
"He yelled that I knocked out his front tooth," Degenhardt said, "but I'm pretty sure his cracked tooth was missing already."
According to Degenhardt, a woman who lives in an apartment across the hall called police.
"The two were fighting. We broke it up until MPD arrived at the scene and sorted everything out," Mascari said.
The suspect was arrested and issued citations for loitering and prowling.
Degenhardt suffered minor injuries, including various scrapes and bruises.
