- Each of the eight fraternities on campus will take part in the Interfraternity Council's IFCares week, which began yesterday.
- Each fraternity will be hosting an event to raise money for their philanthropic cause and will attend other fraternity events to show their support.
- Students can donate to these causes by participating in the campus activities throughout the week.
Marquette fraternities have teamed up for the Interfraternity Council's philanthropy and service week.
Each of the eight fraternity chapters is hosting an event on campus during the second IFCares Week to raise money for philanthropic causes.
"It's nice to see the fraternities come together and concentrate effort on service while helping each other out," said Nick Glaser, IFC vice president for scholarship and service and a senior in the College of Arts & Sciences. "It's a big misconception that there is animosity between the fraternities here. We each have our own identities, but we also identify together as Greeks."
IFCares events kicked off yesterday with the Omega Delta canned food drive, which will be happening at various locations across campus this week.
Sigma Phi Delta is hosting a poker tournament today from 5 to 10 p.m. to raise money for the Boys & Girls Clubs.
Students will have an opportunity to donate to four philanthropic causes on Wednesday when Sigma Phi Epsilon sells bracelets in the Alumni Memorial Union to support domestic violence awareness. Also on Wednesday, Delta Chi will be raising money through Cocoa for Cancer Research under the bridge.
Rain or snow, Triangle Fraternity will be hosting a Bags-a-thon Wednesday from 8 p.m. to midnight.
"We'll be raising money for our philanthropy, Habitat for Humanity, and also going to the other events to show our support and raise awareness for these various organizations," said Gabriel Brackman, IFC president and a senior in the College of Engineering.
Kappa Sigma is hosting a spaghetti dinner on Wednesday to raise money for the Fisher House, an organization that provides housing for military families near hospitals where a relative is being treated. Dinner will be served from 5 to 8 p.m. at 806 N. 15th St.
"We hope to raise about $1,000 for the Fisher House," said Joseph Woelfel, IFC's vice president of communication and a junior in the College of Communication. "We're excited. All of the chapters are doing a service event voluntarily, and it's really showing a sense of community and that they care."
The week's events will conclude on Saturday with Sigma Lambda Beta CPR Awareness Day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m in the AMU. It's also Make A Difference Day, which brings together all fraternity members to help 60 to 80 elderly residents in Milwaukee with yard work.
"We're expecting a good turnout," Glaser said. "I think that this week will be a success."
