Governance proposal available for viewing

The proposal on shared governance – creating a merger of the Academic Senate and Committee on Faculty into a new academic senate – is now up for faculty review and comment on the provost's Web site.

The proposal must still be approved by the Committee on Faculty and Academic Senate, both of which are scheduled to vote on the proposal in their May meetings. Passing those two bodies, the proposal would then be sent to be approved by the administration.

The document is the result of work commissioned by Provost Madeline Wake in November 2005. A joint committee of the Academic Senate and the Committee on Faculty, including School of Education Dean Bill Henk and Kristy Nielson, who became the chair of the COF in 2006, was charged with creating the document.

Part-time faculty to be added to online directory

After a question came up recently as to what types of faculty should be included in the online faculty directory, Wake's answer was all of them, according to Dale Kaser, special assistant to the provost.

So starting next fall, all part-time faculty will be included in the online directory, Kaser said.

"Before this, it was hit or miss" as to whether the part-timers were included, Kaser said. The end result will be that it will be easier for both students and other faculty to contact the part-timers, he said.

Ombuds named

The university has named Kerry Egdorf its new ombuds, according to Brigid O'Brien Miller, director of university communication.

Egdorf has been a member of the College of Communication faculty for many years and currently serves as a lecturer there. She took on the role of ombuds April 1, according to Miller.

As of Monday, Egdorf's name had not been placed on the Office of the Ombuds' Web site, www.marquette.edu/ombuds.

Egdorf takes the ombuds job from Rita Burns, who left last year. The ombuds' job, according to the ombuds Web site, is to "provide a confidential, neutral and informal resource to facilitate resolutions to workplace concerns of faculty and staff. The office also serves students with concerns or complaints based on race or ethnicity."

New student services building?

Although no plans have been set in stone, discussions related to the recent strategic plan, which was released last year and sets goals for the university through 2013, have included the possibility of a new building to house student services.

The possibility of such a building was briefly discussed at a faculty town hall meeting with the administration, according to Committee on Faculty members at their meeting Thursday.

O'Brien Miller said improving student support is listed in the strategic plan as an objective. The plan says that "a new administration building is also a possibility during this strategic timeframe."
