All eyes in the Helfaer Rec Center were fixed on Marquette's Stephen Shao as he had a chance to defeat DePaul's Austin Doerner in the third set to give Marquette its first back-to-back victories of the season. But instead, Doerner sealed the match for his team, defeating Shao 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.
Although Shao could not close the door on DePaul Saturday, Marquette did prevail 7-0 over Chicago State Sunday. The team is 3-3 on the season.
After losing the doubles point to begin play Saturday, Marquette lost five of six first sets to DePaul in singles play.
"When you go down early, you're trying to dig out of a hole, and that's what we were doing all day," assistant coach Raj Gill said.
Saturday was the third loss of the season for the Golden Eagles, and in those three losses they have gone 1-17 in first sets in singles play.
In its previous two losses Marquette lost by a combined score of 13-1, but on Saturday the Golden Eagles ralied after their dismal first sets, resulting in the final score of 4-3.
"A year ago we probably would have just folded in the tent and gone home," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "We kept fighting. Even though they were beating us up in the beginning we came back and actually went up 3-2 with two matches left, which shows a lot of character."
"We'd rather be a team that starts off well, but we're a comeback team and that's what we're known for," freshman Niko Boulieris said. "Our guys are tough, we're all tough guys and even though some of us were down, our fight was enormous."
Although they were disappointed about losing Saturday's match, Boulieris and the rest of the team were gearing up for Sunday's match against Chicago State.
And they rebounded well.
Marquette trounced Chicago State 7-0, going 5-1 in first sets. In their three victories the Golden Eagles are 13-5 in first sets.
Marquette still is searching for its first back-to-back victories of the season.
