Either Marquee editor Rob Ebert has a man-crush on Leonardo DiCaprio or he really does love the newest Martin Scorsese flick.
Picked by Ebert as the best movie of 2006 (along with the best-looking cast), the action-packed and plot-twisting "The Departed" is showing at the Varsity Theatre this weekend.
The movie follows undercover cop Billy Costigan (DiCaprio), who infiltrates the mob run by Frank Costello (played perfectly by Jack Nicholson). Costigan quickly gains Costello's confidence; meanwhile, Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon), a criminal who has infiltrated the police department as an informer for Costello's gang, is rising to a position of power within the department.
Each man's double life eventually consumes him. When the mob and the police figure out each has been infiltrated, Costigan and Sullivan fall in danger of being caught and exposed. Now it's a race for each to discover the other's identity in order to save his own life.
Be sure to catch "The Departed" at the Varsity on Friday at 9 p.m. and Saturday at 6 and 9 p.m.; tickets are $2 with an MUID and $3 without. Say hi to Rob, he'll be there all weekend.
