Essence Carson made sure the Marquette women's basketball team did not earn its fifth straight victory Tuesday night in Piscataway, N.J. The Rutgers forward scored a career-high 25 points and led the No. 23 Scarlet Knights (13-6, 6-2 Big East) to a 66-56 win over the No. 16 Golden Eagles (19-3, 7-2). Senior forward Christina Quaye led Marquette with 14 points, while sophomore guard Krystal Ellis added 12.
The Scarlet Knights opened both halves by going on sizable scoring runs. With just under 13 minutes remaining in the game, Rutgers held a 14-point lead. Marquette's 56-point total was its lowest offensive output of the season. It was the sixth time in the last nine games the Scarlet Knights held their opponent to the opponent's season-low scoring total. Rutgers has won eight of its last nine games after starting off its season slowly.
