WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) – A West Virginia senator has been identified as the owner of 30 greyhounds being hauled to Wisconsin in a trailer involved in a fatal accident in Iowa.
Sen. Mike Green, D-Raleigh, said the dogs, valued at about $5,000 each, are being held at farm near Dubuque, Iowa.
A pickup truck hauling the dogs from Oklahoma to Kenosha, Wis., went off Interstate 80 at about 4:30 a.m. Thursday in Davenport, Iowa, hit a sign and ended up in a field. The attached trailer broke free, plowed into a ditch and rolled at least once.
The driver, Francis Evans of Rayland, Ohio, was killed in the accident. Two passengers were not injured. Police say Evans was prescribed medications that could cause drowsiness.
Three dogs escaped the trailer and were run over and killed by oncoming traffic, police said.
Green said the dogs were being taken to Wisconsin to compete in their first races. He also owns several dogs that race at Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Center.
