Robert A. Wild to its concerns, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education has sent another letter to Wild asking about the state of free speech at the university.
The original concerns stemmed from an incident last fall in which a philosophy teaching assistant, Stuart Ditsler, posted a quote by columnist Dave Barry. The quote was deemed offensive by Philosophy Department chair James South and removed, starting a wave of criticism.
The letter asks whether Ditsler had the right to post the quote, whether students and faculty could post materials on their doors without censorship based on the viewpoint, and whether Marquette students and faculty have free speech rights comparable to a state college.
FIRE seeks a response by Jan. 26.
