I am writing in response to the Jan. 25 staff editorial titled "Student Tsunami Response Inadequate." In the article, it urges students to donate funds to the Jesuit Refugee Service, which "will provide backing for Jesuit missionaries already on the ground" in tsunami affected areas. Let me explain why donating money to this organization would be wrong.
Indonesia, where many of the Jesuit missionaries are currently based, is 85 percent Muslim and has the largest population of Muslims in the world. The Jesuit Refugee Service is providing Tsunami relief but at the same time is trying to advance their cause in promoting Catholicism through the use of these missionaries. This is not only inappropriate, it is downright wrong.
Although I agree with the Marquette Tribune staff member in that many more donations are needed, I urge students to donate to non-political, non sectarian organizations such as Direct Relief International or The Red Cross. Please do not give to a group that will be feeding Muslim Indonesians its Christian agenda, when all they really need is food.
