The Department of Natural Resources said only 19 mature females were taken Sunday on Lake Winnebago, bringing the total to 386, while the harvest cap for them is 500.
"That would be amazing," said longtime spearfisher Joe Pawlowski, 55, of Menasha, "plus the fact that it's totally the opposite of what everybody was believing before the season. Everyone thought it would be over after one day."
Last year, the season ended after only two days due to early success.
