After 15 years of made-to-order food service, the man simply known as "Ziggie" is expanding his restaurant to offer even more options to Marquette students.
Ziggie's new store, Hymopolis, Greek for "Juice City," will open next door to Ziggie's current restaurant on the corner of North 17th and West Wells streets. A doorway will connect the two restaurants.
The new restaurant, which he hopes will open before the end of the semester, will have the same goal as Ziggies to give students a wide variety of food in one place for an affordable price, Ziggie said.
"Anything you can imagine will be here," Ziggie said.
There is a sign in the window of the new restaurant that has "Chipotle" written in giant letters, and this may have led people to anticipate the arrival of a Chipotle chain restaurant. But the sign is actually advertising one of the items on Ziggie's menu.
Ziggie said he is bringing in a chef from Chicago to cook hot chipotle burritos, along with tacos and taco salads.
In addition to these items, the new store will feature Ben & Jerry's ice cream, fresh fruit, various flavors of popcorn, donuts, breakfast burritos, fresh-squeezed juice and Italian ice, among other things, Ziggie said.
The variety comes as a relief to many students who feel that the current fast food selection on campus is insufficient.
The selection "really sucks, because I don't like subs," said Josh Hickman, a College of Arts & Sciences senior.
Many students agreed that the amount of sub shops on campus is overwhelming compared to other restaurants.
"I can only eat so much Jimmy John's," said College of Communication sophomore Nick Dwayne.
Complaints like these have not gone unnoticed.
"We try to open what kids want," Ziggie said.
Hickman and Dwayne both said they would be interested in Ziggie's new restaurant.
Not only will Hymopolis offer alternatives in the fast food department, but also for student's grocery needs.
"You want to order a pound of turkey, a pound of ham, you come to Ziggies," Ziggie said. "And you don't have to go to Pick N' Save because it is too expensive."
Ziggie said he will also sell blocks of cheese and loaves of bread to give students a chance to make their own deli sandwiches.
Ziggie intends for Hymopolis to be a place where students can grab a quick meal in the rhythm of their hectic lives. Buying breakfast at the restaurant will only take a few minutes, he said.
"You grab a burrito, grab your cappuccino, and let's go," he said.
Dwayne said he has noticed all the open spaces around campus and was wondering when a new business would arrive. He also noticed that there has not yet been a restaurant that has really captured students' attention.
"There is always one space on college campuses that people go to," Dwayne said, and Marquette is an exception.
With a wide variety of food, a convenient location and affordable prices, Ziggie's new restaurant could become that place. Just ask Ziggie.
