As a publications adviser, he offered commonsense suggestions to improve our newspaper. He gave us wise advice when we asked for it and showed us how much he believed in our abilities by not interfering with our work. He let us know the newspaper was our responsibility but that he would answer our phone calls at 2 a.m. if we needed him. His passion for the profession was contagious.
As a professor, Tom both challenged and nurtured his students to excel. He taught us the importance of deadlines, accuracy and journalistic integrity. He brought his professional experience into the classroom, which strengthened the educational experience he provided. Tom has served as a wonderful guide, resource and friend.
College of Communication Dean Bill Elliott says the decision not to renew Tom's contract has nothing to do with the administration's recent complaints about some stories the Tribune has run. Elliott cares deeply about the students and the newspaper, and we have no reason to doubt his word. We also admit we don't know every detail of what has happened since we left the university. Still, even with our imperfect information, we are free to disagree with Elliott's decisions. Tom is an asset to the Marquette community.
Finally, we'd like to offer a few words of encouragement for the Tribune staff. Be proud that your readers often forget you are still students and hold you to the standards of professionals. Don't be afraid to make bold decisions, so long as they are well-considered. Keep reporting the truth, though some would prefer you not to. Above all, continue to serve and inform. They are almost the same thing.
