Milwaukee Police officers broke up two more off-campus parties early Saturday morning, but this time the party hosts did not accumulate the large fines other hosts received at previous party busts.
The first party was stopped at 12:24 a.m. at a residence in the 900 block of North 18th Street. According to Capt. Russ Shaw, associate director of the Department of Public Safety, the Milwaukee Police Department issued a 21-year-old male student a citation for operating a Class B tavern without a license. This is essentially a citation for charging partygoers for alcohol without a business license. The student was also issued five citations and will be fined for providing alcohol to underage drinkers. The amount of the fines could not be confirmed.
The second party, at 818 N. 15th Street, was broken up half an hour later. Of the 10 students who live in the residence, three were issued citations for operating a Class B tavern without a license. These citations came with a $343 fine.
One of the party hosts who received a citation said, on the condition of anonymity, at least 40 party attendants were cited for underage consumption of alcohol.
Sgt. John Sgrignuoli of MPD was unable to provide specifics about the two incidents or comment on why the students cited in the second party are not being fined for each student who was drinking underage.
In the past, party hosts have been fined up to $25,000 for charging underage partygoers for alcohol because they have received a citation for every individual found to be an underage drinker.
Anne Schwartz, public relations manager for MPD, has said in the past that MPD is not "trying to keep the kids from having a good time" but is simply enforcing the law.
