The Marquette University libraries, the Brew @ the Bridge and MUSG have combined forces for a special week to promote a clean library environment.
This week, the Brew will not sell beverages in paper cups. Patrons may bring their own mug or may purchase a new one for $1.
Given the libraries' beverage policy of permitting only containers that are secure and spill-proof, the mugs have a special, spill-proof closure.
Although some may consider this an inconvenience, it really has a number of positive aspects.
The Brew @ the Bridge goes through 550 disposable cups each week. Since the first grade we have all been taught the benefits of the three "R's" (reduce, reuse, recycle!).
Let's apply these and help our environment (and our library) out.
Second, try as we might to keep our library tidy, sometimes "spills" happen and much more often then we think.
During the summer of 2005, more than 200 square feet of coffee-stained carpet was replaced in the two-year old building.
Although you may think you can make it from the bridge to the library entrance without tripping and dropping your paper coffee cup and its contents all over the floor, it does happen.
Risking damage to our lovely building is avoidable, so let's avoid it.
Although this paper cup black-out period will only last one week, I really encourage all students to make the switch and use "approved" beverage containers exclusively.
Do not forget to pack your mug and have a lovely week!
