Four men still at large robbed a 22-year-old male student in a rear alley in the 900 block of North 16th Street late Saturday night, according to the Department of Public Safety.
The student was walking down the rear alley at about 11 p.m. when the unidentified men approached him, according to Capt. Russ Shaw, associate director of DPS. The student reported the men were between the ages of 18 and 20, Shaw said.
The student told DPS that one of the men came at him from behind and punched him twice. The student then gave up his wallet, which contained $15 and his identification cards.
Instead of leaving immediately after robbing the student, Shaw said, the men continued to punch the student several more times before fleeing the scene.
DPS was called to the scene at 11:06 p.m. and contacted the Milwaukee Police Department. The student received minor injuries but refused medical treatment, according to Shaw.
The student's wallet containing his identification cards was recovered at the end of the alley and returned to the student. The $15 in cash was not recovered.
MPD had made no arrests as of 5 p.m. Monday, Shaw said.
Despite the robbery, overall crime during the Halloween weekend was relatively low, Shaw said.
"We didn't see any increase in crime over the weekend," he said.
DPS had a clear presence on campus over the weekend, but there were no more units on patrol than usual, Shaw said. He said he designed the DPS unit rotations to allow for a strong presence of DPS during the typically busy hours of 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. During that time, the second and third shifts overlap, so there are more units on campus.
The second shift runs from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. and the third shift begins at 9 p.m. and ends at 7 a.m. Some officers from the second shift were held over until the supervisor felt their presence was no longer needed," Shaw said.
"DPS responded to a lot of calls, but most of the calls didn't require any further follow up," Shaw said.
