A major focus for Marquette's defense heading into Tuesday night's game versus St. John's was shutting down Red Storm guard Kia Wright.
Entering the game, Wright was the Red Storm's leading scorer, averaging 15.3 points per game.
In forty minutes versus the Golden Eagles, Wright managed to score only four points on 2-for-13 shooting. She also turned the ball over five times.
Back in for the comeback
Missing from the Golden Eagles' lineup for most of the first half was junior forward Jasmine McCullough.
After picking up two fouls in the first two minutes, McCullough exited the game and did not return until after halftime.
McCullough played all 20 minutes of a second half that saw Marquette come back from a 17-point deficit.
Although she finished with just three points, McCullough may have been the spark that ignited her team.
"Whether Jasmine is scoring points, that doesn't matter to us," head coach Terri Mitchell said. "Her fire, her energy, her belief gets everyone going."
Kieger honored in pre-game
In pregame festivities Mitchell presented senior Carolyn Kieger with a commemorative ball to mark the point guard's 500th career assist, which she earned in the first game of the season versus Evansville.
Kieger joined Lori Goerlitz as the only players in program history to record 1,000 points and 500 assists.
Holding their own
Heading into Tuesday's game, the Red Storm led the league in rebounding, averaging 47.1 per game. St. John's was also holding opponents to an average of 31.4 rebounds per game.
But the Golden Eagles hung with the Red Storm in the paint all night, and by the end of the game, each team had grabbed 42 rebounds.
