The home of Brandon Henak, business manager for The Warrior, an independent student-run publication, was vandalized early Friday morning for the second time this semester, according to Henak.
Henak, a College of Business Administration senior and the vice chairman of Wisconsin College Republicans, said he awoke Friday morning to find that six eggs had been thrown against the side of his home. Henak reported the incident Friday afternoon on www.gop3.com, a Web log to which he contributes.
The incident likely occurred between 1:30 a.m. and 8 a.m., Henak said.
Friday's vandalism came two days after the second issue of The Warrior was released. While no one has claimed responsibility, Henak said he believed whoever was responsible was lashing out against The Warrior.
On Nov. 4, two days after the year's first issue was released, Henak reported a similar incident of vandalism against his home. In that incidence, ketchup and derogatory signs against The Warrior were used in addition to eggs, he said.
"I am just really disappointed that there are students on this campus that have such a hard time with an independent point of view on campus," he said.
On the blog Friday, Henak wrote that "a few liberal extremists who threw profanities at me and The Warrior last time have to continue their tradition of destruction with this issue."
Noelle Gilbreath, chair of College Democrats at Marquette, said in a statement that College Democrats "do not condone vandalism."
Gilbreath, a College of Arts & Sciences senior, said the incident showed "exactly the sort of behavior that turns people off from politics."
She added that College Democrats "also do not condone Brandon Henak's sensationalization of these events and the unsubstantiated assumption that liberal students are behind them."
Associate Professor of Political Science John McAdams, who has been outspoken in his support of The Warrior, said while it is impossible to know with certainty whether the vandalism was tied to The Warrior, "it sure looks like it."
McAdams said such acts are typically the work of a few disgruntled individuals.
"All it takes is one person who gets really mad at conservative students," he said. "It doesn't mean that liberal students are inclined to vandalism."
Capt. Russ Shaw, associate director of the Department of Public Safety, said there was no indication as of Friday afternoon of who was responsible for the vandalism.
He said DPS "will look at (Henak's) residence and try to prevent this from happening again," but declined to comment on any specific action DPS plans to take.
Henak had a simple message for those responsible: "Please stop."
He said he and the staff of The Warrior "won't be fazed by a bunch of eggs thrown at my house," and asked those who disagree with The Warrior to express themselves with "a civilized reaction."
"We'd be more than happy to print any letters," he said. "We welcome any criticism."
McAdams said he "wouldn't necessarily make too much" of the incident.
"It's just someone who has a problem with the expression of free speech," he said. "It happens on both sides of the fence."
