While today stands as one of the most important days of our lives, tonight also tips-off the 2004-'05 NBA season. And more importantly to some of us, we are only one day away from the Milwaukee Bucks season opener at the Orlando Magic.
Monday I attended the Bucks' season preview luncheon. The lunch consisted of interviews of the Bucks team roster and speeches by General Manager Larry Harris and head coach Terry Porter on this season's expectations.
On my way to the Hyatt for the event, I prepped myself on approaching Harris and bluntly informing him, "I want your job. Since I have been three-years-old, I've wanted to be where you are. Help me be you." While I never had the opportunity to say this, the next three hours were some of the best of my life.
I arrived 45 minutes before the lunch started, so I took advantage of my legal drinking status, shot a few free throws with Energee! (the Bucks dance team) and talked the talk with a few members of the media.
I tried to be as professional as possible, but couldn't help becoming star struck when I suddenly found myself standing next to Michael Redd and Desmond Mason. I didn't feel like asking, "Mike, Des', how's the fam?", so I found my seat.
As I chowed down on my chicken cordon bleu and potatoes, I chatted with a woman next to me about my dream of working in the Bucks front office someday. But I was brought down to earth by her comment that Marquette alums who didn't play for the basketball team get little to no respect in the basketball world.
I responded by telling her that someday, someone will recognize my love of basketball and give me a chance.
Harris and Porter took the stage to discuss the current roster's goals for the season and players were questioned about what they will bring to the team. The most entertaining quotes came from Toni Kukoc who said, "Three hour practice tonight? I don't know if I'll be able to make that one," and, "I don't like to think of myself as an old veteran, as long as I get minutes…Did you hear that, coach?" as he looked over at Porter and they both shared a laugh.
As the lunch wrapped up, I ran into newly acquired point guard Mo Williams on the escalator and asked him why he came to Milwaukee. He responded that he was attracted to the team's family-like atmosphere and that he has already enjoyed himself immensely.
So while I didn't get to meet Harris personally, it was one of the more rewarding experiences of my life. And as I sit and watch tomorrow night's season opener, I will still tell myself, "Someday I will be part of this."
